In the middle of a national disaster, citizens of an affected town are told to evacuate as fast as possible. People generally quickly pack essentials into a car, and run.
But when these citizens were faced with their own natural disaster, they didn’t want to run… they wanted to fight back!
When the waters of the Mississippi River broke in April 2011, it created one of the largest and the most damaging floods in the U.S. But some residents decided they wouldn’t run and let their homes be destroyed…
Residents took matters into their own hands instead of letting THIS happen. Those little rectangles are rooftops.
So they created mini-islands together!
… of course, some of them failed sadly.
Although not all of the barriers held, the cooperation needed by everyone to create their islands to save themselves and their neighbors is incredibly moving.
