Tom Parks recently lost his 24 year old daughter, Molly.
Tom wanted to write a memorial for Molly – he recalled her love for Harry Potter, theater and dressing up – but he also wanted to do something very different. He wanted to be honest about her death.
You see, Molly was passionate about life but she also made a few bad decisions. She was heavily involved with drugs and it was a heroin overdose that took her life in the end.
Tom knew that when obituaries of young people say they “died suddenly”, it usually means one of two things – suicide or drug overdose. He didn’t want to hide behind this phrase and wanted to be transparent and blunt. He didn’t want Molly’s death to be in vain.
So Tom bravely decided what he wanted to say to remember Molly. It took him a long time to write, through tears and immense sadness. He writes:
He continues in her official obituary where he told the truth. In addition to remembering Molly’s life’s passions, the obituary reads:
“Along Molly’s journey through life, she made a lot of bad decisions including experimenting with drugs. She fought her addiction to heroin for at least five years and had experienced a near fatal overdose before. Molly’s family truly loved her and tried to be as supportive as possible as she struggled with the heroin epidemic that has been so destructive to individuals and families in her age bracket.
If you have any loved one’s who are fighting addiction, Molly’s family asks that you do everything possible to be supportive, and guide them to rehabilitation before it is too late.”
Tom hopes that his honesty just might shed light on the drugs epidemic and save someone else’s life, even if it’s just one person at a time.
While his daughter’s life came to a painful end, Tom will always remember his daughter as the vibrant young life that he loves and treasures forever.
