People Bashed Them For Having A Baby That Looks Like Dad. Their Response Is Astounding
When Simon and Vicky met 5 years ago in a sign language class, Vicky had no idea that she was going to fall in love with him. But that she did and a few years later, they decided to have a child. But it wasn’t the typical baby discussion.
Simon has Treacher Collins Syndrome (TC), which is characterized by deformities such as the absence of cheekbones. Simon is also deaf and spent much of his childhood indoors to escape horrible bullies.
Vicky has had three children already and was sterilized afterward. For her to have another child, she would have to go through in vitro fertilization (IVF).
After a lot of thought, they decided to go through with it.
After their baby named Alice was born, it was revealed that she also has TC.
Alice’s case is milder than her dad’s but she is deaf and has facial deformities that lead to difficulty eating. Both dad and daughter have been cruelly taunted by others, including baby Alice being called a ‘gargoyle’.
People have criticized this couple for choosing to have a baby when they knew the chance of having TC would be high. They’ve called the couple selfish and point to other methods of raising a family such as adoption.
On the other side, others have also defended this couple’s right to have a child. While TC can hinder life, dad has learnt to live with it so the baby can too. This is what dad has to say about her:
“I never wished for Alice not to have TC. Even though I grew up with all the problems and complications it really didn’t bother me either way whether she had it or not. We all knew if she had it that she’d be surrounded with people who loved her whatever. There’s nothing on this planet anywhere near as special as Alice. She’s changed my life. There’s no doubt about it. She’s her dad’s little girl and I will tell her she is beautiful every day.”
