Woman’s Facebook Post Perfectly Disproves A Huge Misconception About Sexual Harassment

It was a normal Thursday morning for Christen Brandt. But as the New Yorker headed into the crowded subway station, a stranger came up and harassed her. Sadly for many women, this seems to be an everyday occurrence they just have to “put up with”. Christen posted about her experience online (including what she was wearing) where it’s quickly gathering a lot of momentum:

Christen is the co-founder of She’s The First, an organization that provides scholarships to girls in low-income families and she makes an important point about the accepted belief that street harassment is “okay” because of the clothes victims wear. Not that it matters but she was wearing a heavy coat during the encounter.

“Next time you wonder whether your skirt is too short, next time you ask your teen daughter to change her clothes, or the next time you hear about school dress codes in the news, remember this photo,” she says. “All women have these moments. All of us. And yet the world acts as if it’s still our problem to fix.”

According to Hollaback!, an anti-harassment movement, one of the most powerful ways to stop street harassment is by speaking out and sharing your story, which is exactly what Christen did. Through her brave post on Facebook, she empowered other women to speak out about their experiences.
